Eric Parnow threw a complete game shutout to lead the San Rafael Pacifics to the 2023 Pecos League Championship. Parnow struck out 11 batters and limited the Saguaros to three hits. Kyle Guerra lead the game off with a double and scored on Beau Dormans hit. Nick Smith singled in the 4th and scored on John Bicos hit to give the Pacifics a 2-0 lead.

Jay Cervantes pitched 7 innings for the Tucson Saguaros with 7 strikeouts allowing 2 runs. Brendan Konal started the 8th inning for the Saguaros and loaded the bases without getting an out. Travis Cole came out of the pen for Tucson getting a strikeout and then a home to first double play to end the inning.

SHUTDOWN: TUCSON BLANKS SAN RAFAEL; DECIDER ON SATURDAY Tucson 4-9-0, SAN RAFAEL 0-2-1 (Series tied at 1 win each) After pulling away from Tucson in Thursdays Pecos League Championship Series opener, San Rafael ran into brick-wall pitching from Saguaros starter Justin Fuson and two relievers as the Arizona nine shut out the Pacifics, 4-0, in San Rafael. The Tucson win forces a third and deciding game Saturday night at Albert Park.

Fuson, a 60" right-hander who completed his senior college season at Fresno Pacific this spring, stymied the Pacific Division champions on one hit over 5.2 innings with five strikeouts. Fuson did issue four walks but none led to any blemishes on the scoreboard. He was relieved in the sixth by Daulton Montagna, a lefty out of Eastern Tennessee who limited San Rafael to one hit and a pair of walks with four Ks through the eighth before giving way to Tucson native Travis Cole, who played college ball at Memphis Christian Brothers. Cole set the Pacifics down in order with two strikeouts and closed the game with a swinging strikeout of John Bicos.

The Saguaros were led at the plate by their number nine batter, shortstop Gavy Perez-Torres, who went 3-for-4 with a homer and two RBIs. Brock Ephan contributed a pair of hits and two ribbies and Tucson scored all four of their runs off Pacific starter Jake Dent, who exited after four innings. Kohto Hasegawa tossed five commendable innings of scoreless ball out of the San Rafael bullpen but the Californians could only muster two hits from Kevin Johnson, Thursdays hero at the plate with a double, homer and two ribbies in Game One. Shutouts seemingly appear in the Pecos League as often as Halleys Comet and this one was a combined gem for the visitors.

Tucson hopes to carry enough momentum to win their third Pecos League flag since 2020 (and fourth overall) in Saturdays deciding game while San Rafael seeks to rebound and cop their first pennant since joining the circuit in 2020. Game Three is set to start at 6PM in Albert Park.

PACIFICS WIN GAME 1 OF PECOS LEAGUE TITLE SET

SAN RAFAEL 5-6-1, Tucson 3-6-1 (San Rafael leads series, 1 game to 0)

Kevin Johnson drove in two runs on a double and homer while Alex Valasek pitched 8.1 strong innings to lead San Rafael to a 5-3 win over visiting Tucson Thursday night at Albert Park in Game One of the Pecos League Championship Series. The Pacifics have a chance to complete a two-game sweep of the best-of-3 set Friday night for their first Pecos pennant while the Saguaros need a win to force a deciding Game Three on Saturday. The entire series is being played in Marin County.

San Rafael opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth when Johnson belted a two-run roundtripper off Tucson starter Isaac Keehn, whod plunked Kyle Guerra with the first pitch of the inning. Johnson then sent Keehns second offering over the fence to break a scoreless tie.

The Cacti evened the score in the top of the sixth when Steve Joyner came in from third on a Madison Santos groundout to second with B.J. Minarcin advancing to third on the play. Minarcin made it a 2-2 tilt four pitches later when Brock Ephan grounded out toTucson shortstop Gavy Perez-Torres.

The Pacifics regained the lead for good in the bottom of the seventh on a two-run single by Mike Thiesen off Tucson reliever Jackson Smith, whod replaced Keehn on the mound two batters earlier after Keehn walked Grant Victor on a full count pitch. San Rafael stretched their advantage to 5-2 in the eighth when Nick Smith singled home Johnson, whod doubled off Smith earlier in the frame.

Tucson scored a final run in the top of the ninth when Kirkland Trahans ground-rule double off incoming reliever Chris Johnson (whod come in after Valaseks 133rd pitch) scored Ephan from second. Johnson retired the final two batters as Zach Campbells swinging strikeout ended the game.

Valasek, the Pacific Division Pitcher of the Year, got the win after giving up three runs (two earned) on five hits while striking out 10 Tucson batsmen in 8.1 innings while Johnson got the save. Keehn took the loss despite a good outing of 6.1 innings in which he allowed four runs (two earned) on four hits with nine whiffs. Joyner had two hits for the Saguaros while Ephan and Trahan each sliced two-baggers. Johnson and Nick Smith had two hits each for the Pacifics.

It took a while but the Tucson Saguaros were able to shake free of the visiting Trinidad Triggers and went on to take a 12-7 win over the Coloradans Monday night at Kino Stadium, sweeping the Pecos Leagues Mountain Division Championship Series in two straight games to punch their ticket to the League Championship Series in San Rafael later this week.

B.J. Minarcin led the way for the Cacti offense by going 3-for-5 at the plate with five RBIs while Jordan Medina and JuJuan Franklin socked solo homers to back starting pitcher Brendan Konal and three relievers. Peter Bocchino blasted a pair of roundtrippers for the Triggers, whod tied the contest at 4-4 after a three-run fifth inning before the Saguaros regained the lead in the bottom of the frame. Tucson scored at least once in each of their final five turns before time ran out on Trinidad, who pushed their final two runs of the season across in the top of the ninth. Bocchino finished with three hits and three RBIs for Trinidad while Jason Rooks and Quinterrious Arrington had two hits each as starter Ben Kowalski (5 IP, 5 ER, 9 H, 4 K) took the loss. Konal (5 IP, 4 ER, 5 H, 6 K) was awarded the win for Tucson. In completing their broom job Monday night to sweep both playoff series against Garden City and Trinidad, the Saguaros bought a little extra time to make the carpool trip to Marin County, where theyll open the best-of-3 League Championship Series in California. Like Tucson, the Pacifics finished first in their division regular season (Tucson went 34-13 in the Mountain Division while San Rafael went 39-8 in the Pacific Division) and swept both Lancaster and Bakersfield to reach the title series. With no crossover games in 2023, this will mark the first time teams from both divisions meet on the field with no less than a league pennant on the line.

A four-run fourth inning put Tucson in the lead for good as the Saguaros went on to defeat visiting Trinidad, 8-5, in the first game of the Pecos Leagues Mountain Division Championship Series Sunday night in the Arizona City. One more win in the best-of-3 series will send the Cacti into the league championship series later this week in San Rafael.

Tucson had taken a 2-0 lead after B.J. Minarcin scored on a Madison Santos groundout in the first and an RBI double by Kirkland Trahan that brought Jordan Medina around from first base one inning later. Trinidad put three runs on the scoreboard in the top of the third when David Arza scored on a double by Jason Rooks, who came in on a two-run Jordan Anderson homer off Jaymon Cervantes in a matchup of the divisions Batter of the Year and Pitcher of the Year, respectively. Tucson tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the frame when Santos crossed the dish when Trahan grounded into a fielders choice. In the fateful fourth, the Saguaros plated four runs, three coming in on a Brock Ephan homer on an 0-2 pitch from Dakota Rodd, whod just replaced starter Joel Ballard on the mound. That put Tucson ahead by a 7-3 count and it was a matter of Cervantes and reliever Jackson Smith holding down the potent Triggers over the remaining five innings. Although Trinidad did come to within a pair of runs in the sixth when Jake Urena scored on a double from Quinterrious Arrington, who later scored on a two-out DeMarcus Kelly triple, the Saguaros added an insurance run in the eighth when an Ephan singled drove in Minarcin from third to end the nights scoring.

A third-year pro from NAIA powerhouse Lewis-Clark State who played for Ogden of the Pioneer League in 2021 before batting .429 with 14 homers in 39 games for Tucson last year, Ephan finished 3-for-5 in the game with five RBIs for the Saguaros. Arza collected two of the Triggers nine hits and stole a base. Cervantes earned the win, going 5.2 innings and allowing all Trinidad runs, while Ballard absorbed the loss after he was tagged for five runs on four hits and five walks over 3.1 entradas. Smith held Trinidad scoreless on two hits over the final 3.1 frames, with four Ks and no free passes.

Jayman Cervantes of the Tucson Saguaros has been named Mountain Division Pitcher of the Year.

Jayman went 6-1 with a 3.61 ERA in 47.1 innings pitched. He had a pitchers score of 29 with 59 strikeouts to 22 walks. The Tucson Native helped the Saguaros get the number seed in the Mountain Division Playoffs.

Cowboys Bats Struggle In 10-2 Loss

The Alpine Cowboys hosted the Tucso

The Alpine Cowboys hosted the Tucson Saguaros for the first time this season on June 5th. The Saguaros got out to an early lead in the top of the 1st inning when Steve Joyner came in to score on an errant throw from Alpine starting pitcher Camrin Wleczyk. Zachary Campbell then came in minutes later on an RBI single from Jordan Medina. The Saguaros then scored three more runs in the 3rd inning after RBI singles from Zachary Campbell and Jordan Medina. the Saguaros brought in 10 total runs through the top of the 9th inning before the Cowboys were finally able to find the board. The Cowboys put up two runs in the bottom of the 9th after a wild pitch brought home Manny Garcia. Alex Canty then registered the only RBI for the Cowboys, singling to bring home Kam Holland. This late comeback attempt was unsuccessful as the Saguaros were able to close the door on the Cowboys, winning game one 10-2. Logan Chapman took the win in game one for the Saguaros, throwing 8 complete innings and shutting down the Cowboys. Chapman ended his outing with 8 strikeouts, while allowing just 5 hits and 3 walks. Camrin Wleczyk took ended up taking the loss in last night"s game, lasting through 4.0 innings and allowing 6 runs, with 4 earned on 6 hits. Wleczyk also ended with 2 strikeouts and 2 walks. The Front of the Saguaros lineup showed out at the plate, going a combined 6-14 and scoring 5 of the 10 runs for the Saguaros. RJ Johnson was also a standout player, going 2-4 with a single and double, while notching 2 RBIs. Alex Canty led the way for the Cowboys at the plate, going 2-4 with two singles and an RBI. Drew Bayard also stood out with two singles in his four plate appearances. After this game, the Cowboys record now sits at 3-3 this season, while the Saguaros move to a Mountain Division best 5-1. The 2nd of this two-game series will be played on June 6th at 7 pm at Kokernot Field.

Sean McNeill will return to Tucson

Sean McNeill will return to Tucson to manage the Saguaros for 2023 season. Sean won the Pecos League Championship in 2020 and 2021 with the Saguaros. He lead the Saguaros to the last game of the Championship in 2022 before losing to Roswell.
See Seans manager record here McNeill begin his managing in Pecos League with Hollywood Stars travel team in 2017. He then moved to Ruidoso Osos in 2018. 2019 saw McNeill take them helm of the High Desert Yardbirds. 2020 saw McNeill take the reigns of the Tucson Saguaros where he has been ever since. Seans 182 Pecos League wins trail only Bill Moore as the all time winningest regular season manager.

The Saguaros begin their 2023 season in Austin Texas on June 1.
