Prior to the beginning of the 2020 Pecos League season, Tucson manager Sean McNeill was confident he had a good team. Then the Saguaros lost their first game by the score of 16-5. Ooops.

It was time for a re-set, and McNeill didn’t waste any time.

“I got the guys together afterward,” McNeill said, “and told them ‘If you want to keep playing this way, OK. But I’ve got the phone numbers of a lot of other players, and I can start calling them now.’ We should be better than this.”

And Tucson got better immediately, going on an 11-game winning streak and never letting up. The Saguaros finished the truncated season with a 26-4 mark, 10.5 games ahead of second-place Salina, and then won the league title by defeating Salina in the championship round in late August.

First baseman Nathan Etheridge acknowledged that the opening-game loss was a wake-up call.

Nathan Etheridge was named 2020 Pec

Nathan Etheridge was named 2020 Pecos League MVP. Ethridge was the only player to play in all 30 games where he hit .438 with 5 HRs and a league leading 59 rbis. He occupied the four hole and played first base for the Champion Tucson Saguaros. He struck out just 10 times in 130 at bats while walking 17 times.

Cody Earl has been named Pecos League Pitcher of the Year. Cody went 5-0 and logged a league high 55.2 innings and saved the biggest game of the year for the Saguaros in the playoffs against Salina. He had 37 strikeouts and finished with a WHIP of 1.47. He was the reliable arm of a pitching staff that had several injuries. He appeared in 12 of the Saguaros 30 games including 8 starts.

Chris Caffrey has been named offensive player of the year for the Pecos League"s 2020 season. Caffrey hit .378 with 5 Home Runs for the Saguaros. He was the go to guy in the playoffs and down the stretch with the bat in his hands. Caffrey was a utility player that played right field, 2nd base and third base for the Saguaros. His Pecos League hitter score was 176 which only trailed Nathan Etheridge. He only struck out seven times in ninety at bats.

The Tucson Saguaros defeated the Houston Hot Shots 4-3 at the first Spring Training Game at Coastal Baseball Park. After morning rains the temperature was surprising cool for the Saguaros. Prompting them to debut their all black jerseys. "The humidity was overwelming for our players but we are ready to go." said Sean McNeill.

Left Fielder Blake Berry hit a three run homer that was the difference in the game. Jon Schultz pitched 5 innings for the Saguaros.

The Hot Shots were lead by several Pecos League players including Jake Gonzalez (Cal City/Garden City) 2 rbis, Eddie Grimaldo (Ruidoso) and Scott Walton (Santa Fe).

On Sunday 6/21/2020 the Saguaros return to action against the Texas Twins at 5:00 PM at Coastal Park.
