Prior to the beginning of the 2020 Pecos League season, Tucson manager Sean McNeill was confident he had a good team. Then the Saguaros lost their first game by the score of 16-5. Ooops.

It was time for a re-set, and McNeill didn’t waste any time.

“I got the guys together afterward,” McNeill said, “and told them ‘If you want to keep playing this way, OK. But I’ve got the phone numbers of a lot of other players, and I can start calling them now.’ We should be better than this.”

And Tucson got better immediately, going on an 11-game winning streak and never letting up. The Saguaros finished the truncated season with a 26-4 mark, 10.5 games ahead of second-place Salina, and then won the league title by defeating Salina in the championship round in late August.

First baseman Nathan Etheridge acknowledged that the opening-game loss was a wake-up call.

Nathan Etheridge was named 2020 Pecos League MVP. Ethridge was the only player to play in all 30 games where he hit .438 with 5 HRs and a league leading 59 rbis. He occupied the four hole and played first base for the Champion Tucson Saguaros. He struck out just 10 times in 130 at bats while walking 17 times.

Cody Earl has been named Pecos League Pitcher of the Year. Cody went 5-0 and logged a league high 55.2 innings and saved the biggest game of the year for the Saguaros in the playoffs against Salina. He had 37 strikeouts and finished with a WHIP of 1.47. He was the reliable arm of a pitching staff that had several injuries. He appeared in 12 of the Saguaros 30 games including 8 starts.

Chris Caffrey has been named offensive player of the year for the Pecos League"s 2020 season. Caffrey hit .378 with 5 Home Runs for the Saguaros. He was the go to guy in the playoffs and down the stretch with the bat in his hands. Caffrey was a utility player that played right field, 2nd base and third base for the Saguaros. His Pecos League hitter score was 176 which only trailed Nathan Etheridge. He only struck out seven times in ninety at bats.

August 25 2020 The Tucson Saguaros defeated the Salina Stockade 7-2 after scoring four runs in the second inning and adding single runs in the fourth fifth and seventh. Salina scored once in the first and once in the seventh. Tucson outhit Salina 9-5 and committed one error while the Stockade played error-free baseball.

Chris Caffery led Tucson�s offense by going 3-for-3 with two home runs two runs and four RBI. Cody Earl went 2-for-3 with two runs and a walk while James Prockish doubled and scored. Gary Mason added a hit and an RBI. For Salina Aaron Takacs collected two hits with one run and one RBI and Jared Gay had a hit and an RBI.

Earl also earned the win on the mound, allowing five hits and two earned runs in seven innings with one walk and four strikeouts. James Causey finished the game with two hitless scoreless innings and struck out three. Salina starter Tommy Giunta took the loss after giving up seven hits and six earned runs in five innings while walking four and striking out three.

August 19 2020 The Salina Stockade defeated the Tucson Saguaros 15-14 in a high-scoring game. Salina finished with 15 runs on 11 hits, while Tucson collected 15 hits and scored 14 runs. The Stockade committed three errors and Tucson had one.

Tucson jumped ahead with six runs in the first inning, but Salina answered with four runs in the second, five in the third and four in the fourth to take control. The Stockade added a run in the fifth and another in the seventh. Tucson narrowed the gap with four runs in the sixth and two in the ninth, but Salina held on for the one-run victory.

Noah Mahoney led Tucson with four hits and five RBI, including a home run and a double. James Prockish added three hits, while Christopher Eusay, T. DeBonville and N. Etheridge each had two hits. For Salina, Aaron Takacs and Drew Schutt each recorded two hits, with Schutt scoring three runs and Takacs driving in two. Jared Gay had two RBI and a double, while E. Geraci drove in three runs.

Houston built a 7-2 lead through six innings with three-run rallies in the fifth and sixth. Tucson answered with four runs in the seventh, then broke the game open with six runs in the eighth before adding three more in the ninth. Houston scored twice in the seventh but was held scoreless in the final two innings.

Tucson scored five runs in the first, added two in the second and third, then broke the game open with eight runs in the fifth and four in the sixth. Roswell scored six times in the first and once in the fourth but was held scoreless over the final five innings.

Nick Etheridge led Tucson�s 20-hit attack with three hits, three runs and six RBIs, including a home run and a triple. Blake Berry went 4-for-4 with three runs, three RBIs and a home run. Christopher Eusay added two hits, three runs and three RBIs with a home run, while Marcus Catalano drove in four runs and Danny Kerr finished with two hits and two RBIs. Tucson recorded four home runs in the game.

Cody Earl earned the win for Tucson after allowing seven runs six earned on seven hits over six innings. He struck out four and walked four. Edwin Saint-Hilaire and Issac Olguin combined for three scoreless innings of relief with one hit allowed and one strikeout.

Roswell collected seven hits, with Jacob Lentz Ian Yetsko and Rene Moreda recording two apiece. Coleton Horner and Yetsko each drove in two runs. Eddie Grimaldo led Salina with three hits, two runs and a triple, while Alex Nielson went 2-for-5 with two runs. E. Geraci and Hudson Bilodeau each drove in two runs, and Khalyd Cox added one RBI. Salina also benefited from two hits by Aaron Takacs, who scored once and doubled.

Blake Berry supplied Tucson�s biggest offensive blow with a home run and two RBI. Marcus Catalano and N. Etheridge each added an RBI, while Christopher Eusay and James Prockish scored Tucson�s other runs.

Roswell answered with four runs in the third and two in the fifth but was held scoreless over the final four innings.

Erwin Real led Tucson with three hits and three runs, while N. Etheridge went 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBI. Chris Caffery drove in three runs and Danny Kerr added two hits and three RBI. Etheridge hit a home run and a double, while Caffery and Kerr also homered.

Ian Yetsko supplied most of Roswells offense, going 2-for-4 with five RBI and a home run. Taichi Nakamura and Coleton Horner each collected two hits, with Horner also drawing three walks.

Tucson also received two hits from Gary Mason Jr. and scored 21 runs despite leaving eight runners on base.

Salina collected 16 hits in the loss. Hudson Bilodeau led the Stockade by going 3-for-5 with two runs, one RBI and a home run. July 15 2020 The Tucson Saguaros defeated the Houston Apollos 24-10 in a high-scoring game. Tucson collected 19 hits and scored in seven innings, while Houston finished with 13 hits. The Saguaros committed one error and Houston made three.

Tucson took control early with four runs in the first inning followed by six in the second and six more in the third to build a 16-3 lead. Houston answered with four runs in the sixth and two in the seventh, but Tucson added six runs in the eighth to put the game out of reach.

N. Etheridge led Tucson�s offense with four hits, four runs and seven RBI in six at-bats. James Prockish also had four hits, scored four runs and drove in three, while Danny Kerr went 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBI. Noah Mahoney added a home run and two RBI, and Erwin Real collected two hits and scored once. Houston�s Tyler Blair went 3-for-3 with two runs and an RBI, and E. Olvio had two hits, including a triple, with two runs and one RBI.

Jake Lialios earned the win after allowing one hit and no runs with three strikeouts in two innings. Tucson�s pitchers held Houston to 10 runs, with Nick Escalera allowing one run over two innings to finish the game. Cole Ellis was charged with the loss for Houston, while C. Stacy allowed nine runs on 10 hits in two innings and Houston Williams surrendered six runs in one inning.

July 11 2020 The Tucson Saguaros defeated the Roswell Invaders 9-3 behind a 19-hit attack. Tucson scored three runs in the first inning, added one in the second, three in the fourth and two in the eighth while holding Roswell to one run in each of the first third and fourth innings. Tucson committed no errors while Roswell had two.

Thomas DeBonville led Tucson with five hits in five at-bats, one RBI and one run scored. Blaze Speas and Christopher Eusay each collected three hits and scored twice. Nathan Etheridge drove in two runs, while James Prockish and Chris Caffery each had two hits and one RBI. Tucson also received doubles from Prockish and Tyler Baumann.

Erwin Real earned the win for Tucson after allowing nine hits and three runs two earned in five innings. He struck out eight and walked four. Josh Lialios, Ryan Porras and Marcos Alcoverde combined for four scoreless innings in relief, allowing one hit while recording five strikeouts.

Roswell received two hits apiece from Taichi Nakamura, Ernie Geraci and Ausar Rankin. Nakamura scored once and stole three bases, while Geraci drove in one run. Max Maarleveld took the loss after surrendering six hits and four runs three earned in two innings. Zach Love allowed six hits and three runs in 1.1 innings as Tucson extended its advantage.

Tucson broke the game open with an eight-run fourth inning to take a 13-0 lead. Salina answered with one run in the fifth four in the seventh and two in the ninth but could not complete the comeback.

Tucson scored 13 runs on eight hits and 11 walks. T. DeBonville scored three runs and drove in two while reaching base four times with one hit and two walks. E. Real went 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI. C. Eusay added two RBI and D. Kerr scored twice while contributing one RBI. Tucson also received two RBI each from M. Catalano and C. Caffery.

Salina collected 13 hits in the loss. H. Bilodeau went 2-for-5 with a double a triple and three RBI while A. Nielson went 2-for-4 with two RBI. L. Myers and B. Dansereau each added two hits.

Cody Earl earned the win for Tucson after allowing five earned runs on eight hits in 6.1 innings. He walked six and struck out four. Jim Kennedy completed the game with 2.2 innings of relief allowing two earned runs while striking out four. Ben Butler took the loss for Salina after allowing four earned runs and five walks in two-thirds of an inning.

July 9 2020 The Tucson Saguaros defeated the Houston Apollos 13-4 after collecting 13 hits and scoring in five innings. Tucson took an early 5-0 lead with three runs in the first inning and two more in the second. Houston answered with two runs in the third and two in the fifth, but Tucson added three in the fifth to maintain an 8-4 advantage.

Tucson pulled away late with two runs in the seventh and three in the eighth. James Prockish, Cody Earl, Danny Kerr, Christopher Eusay and T. DeBonville each recorded two hits for the Saguaros. Prockish and Chris Caffery drove in two runs apiece, while Earl also finished with two RBIs. Caffery had one hit in one at-bat, and the Saguaros totaled five doubles and two triples.

Houston�s offense produced nine hits, including a home run by Mike Million. Million went 1-for-5 with two RBIs and one run scored, while Aaron Stubblefield went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Trey Silmon scored twice, and the Apollos also received two hits and two RBIs from Stubblefield.

Darian Fleming earned the win for Tucson after allowing seven hits and four runs in six innings, with four walks and three strikeouts. Eli Straw followed with two scoreless innings and three strikeouts, and Martin Alcoverde completed the game with a scoreless ninth. July 3 2020 The Tucson Saguaros defeated the Roswell Invaders 5-4 after both teams scored four runs in the first inning. Tucson added the deciding run in the fifth and finished with 10 hits, while Roswell also collected 10 hits. The Saguaros committed two errors and Roswell had one.

Danny Kerr powered Tucson with a home run and three RBIs, while Cody Earl went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a walk. T. DeBonville added three hits, and Erwin Real drove in a run. Roswell received a two-RBI home run from Ausar Rankin, while Scott Martinez and Ian Yetsko each drove in two runs. Coleton Horner had three hits for the Invaders.

July 2 2020 The Salina Stockade defeated the Tucson Saguaros 16-5 after totaling 14 hits and scoring in four innings. Salina broke the game open with seven runs in the second inning and added five more in the fourth before finishing with three runs in the eighth and one in the ninth. Tucson collected 11 hits and scored three times in the third inning plus single runs in the fifth and eighth.

Aaron Takacs led Salina with three hits, four RBI and three runs scored, including a double and a triple. Eddie Grimaldo went 3-for-6 with three RBI and two runs scored while Jordan Dicks and Drew Schutt each had two hits and two RBI. B. Dansereau added two hits and scored three runs, and Lance Myers drew four walks.

Jacob Williams earned the win for Salina after allowing one run on one hit with two walks and one strikeout in two innings. Alex Clayton and Nicholas Ray each worked a scoreless inning, while Salina pitchers combined for eight strikeouts. Sati Santa Cruz took the loss for Tucson after allowing seven runs on three hits and five walks in 1.2 innings.

Tucson�s T. DeBonville and N. Etheridge each recorded three hits, with DeBonville driving in two runs. Salina�s 16 runs came despite three errors, while Tucson also committed three errors in the game.

The Tucson Saguaros defeated the Houston Hot Shots 4-3 at the first Spring Training Game at Coastal Baseball Park. After morning rains the temperature was surprising cool for the Saguaros. Prompting them to debut their all black jerseys. "The humidity was overwelming for our players but we are ready to go." said Sean McNeill.

Left Fielder Blake Berry hit a three run homer that was the difference in the game. Jon Schultz pitched 5 innings for the Saguaros.

The Hot Shots were lead by several Pecos League players including Jake Gonzalez (Cal City/Garden City) 2 rbis, Eddie Grimaldo (Ruidoso) and Scott Walton (Santa Fe).

On Sunday 6/21/2020 the Saguaros return to action against the Texas Twins at 5:00 PM at Coastal Park.
